Growing Tomatoes in Containers: A Family Gardening Adventure

Image
I am raising tomatoes in containers this year. May was a very rainy month, which provided my plants with plenty of water. Now, my tomatoes are taking off with growth and have just started producing their first ripe fruits. This journey has not only been about cultivating delicious produce but also about creating enriching family activities centered around gardening and learning about photosynthesis. My tomato plants Tiny cherry tomatoes Better Boy Tomatoes Photosynthesis Fun: Learning Through Observation One of the most rewarding aspects of growing tomatoes has been watching my children learn about photosynthesis. We’ve turned our garden into a living classroom with a couple of fun activities: 1. Leaf Collection and Observation: We collected leaves from our tomato plants and other plants around the yard. Using a magnifying glass, the kids examined the leaves, looking at the tiny veins and discussing how sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water help the plants ma...

Wishing Everyone a Safe and Fun 4th of July! As we gear up to celebrate the 4th of July, I want to wish everyone a safe and joyous holiday. This day is not only a time for festivities but also an excellent opportunity to bring a little science and math into the celebrations. Here are some fun and educational activities to make your Independence Day both exciting and enlightening. Science Activities Fireworks Chemistry Fireworks are a staple of the 4th of July, and they provide a fantastic opportunity to explore chemistry. Discuss with your kids the different elements that create the various colors in fireworks: Strontium produces red. Sodium gives off yellow. Copper results in blue. Barium creates green. You can even conduct a safe at-home experiment using sparklers and discussing the combustion process. Solar Oven S'mores Harness the power of the sun to make a delicious treat! Create a solar oven using a pizza box, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, and black construction paper. T...

My Journey in Teaching: From Special Education to Math and Science

My Journey in Teaching: From Special Education to Math and Science Hello! I’m not quite sure why I’m even attempting to start a blog. It’s not like I have so much spare time in my life. However, I feel that sharing my journey might resonate with some of you and maybe even provide a bit of inspiration. Let me introduce myself and tell you about my career in education. Early Beginnings: A Shift in Focus I started teaching during the 2001-2002 school year, but my path to becoming an educator wasn’t straightforward. Initially, I aimed to become a speech-language pathologist (SLP). My collegiate journey began with a focus on speech-language pathology, but after taking a few educational courses, I became interested in doing a double major—one in speech-language pathology and the other in special education. Embracing Special Education During my studies, the licensing law for teachers was changing in my home state, prompting me to switch majors to Special Education. I spent seven years as a sp...

Lesson PLans & Monthly Calendars

Changes     It's been a long time since  I have written a post. Since my last post, I have switched from teaching seventh grade mathematics to Algebra 1 at the high school. Our standards and our state assessments changed last year. WOW! What a year! Weekly Lesson Plans      A person's point of view could determine the importance of  writing weekly lesson plans (LPs). For some teachers, it is the moment of  dreed of facing a dead line and doing  the same task each week. A spark of excitement may surge through some teachers as they write and create their master piece lesson plans.       When I was a new teacher, I handwrote my LPs in the traditional lesson planning book that my school district provided. At the end of the year, I had to turn in my lesson plan book to my principal. I soon began to wonder if I was writing the same thing year after year. I didn't have a ...
